They have created human like robots but they want to take this a step farther

The technology in the face of the robot and the cars - WOW

Created a child robot to replace a child that this family lost (real child is preserved and frozen)

This boy watches every single thing that this Mom does

David really is half kid and half robot- he makes the mistakes of a kid but has the creepy manor of robot

Her real son woke up and is back with his family

Martin is an evil little child (jealous of David)

^He and the other human children make David appear evil- making him cut moms hair, and stabbing him with a knife

He learns he is not the only David and is not unique he is just the first of his kind

He prayed to this fairy forever

Eventually he couldn’t move but his eyes stayed open looking at the blue fairy

2000 years passed by

The way the world looks, the transportation and the alien life - WOW

They found and recovered David

And are able to look at his memories

"I will do anything that is possible but I cannot make you a real boy"

They recreated his home and tried to make it perfect for David

Teddy saved the hair he cut off of Monica

They are able to bring her back for just one day

This was the best day - no henry , martin, or grief

She told him that she loved him and always has

My Commentary:

Towards the beginning I definitely found David's character to be almost disturbing because of how robot-is he seemed but I really enjoyed his development throughout the movie and how in the end he might not have gotten his wish to be a real boy but because of his development throughout the film and his experiences he certainly seems much closer to a real human. Additionally, considering this film is from 2001 the technological concepts and the deep look this movie took on the future of A.I and its capabilities was crazy. Overall, I really enjoyed this film and its very touching ending!

Phillip K. Dick

Phillip K Dick is an author who created 44 novels and a countless number of short stories. He passed away at 53 years old, but during his 30 year period of work he managed to change the face of science fiction on screen. Dick struggled with a fragmented view of reality for a large portion of his life. Despite this, Phillip K Dick had an amazing ability to almost foreshadow the modern world through his work. Dick implemented many things that we see present in the world into his own work including the ideas of virtual reality, 3D printing, and much more. This just demonstrates how Dick's vivid visions and separation from reality helped him to become one of the most influential people in both literature and Sci-Fi film.

2001 Space Odyssey Notes

NOTES:

Introduction: black screen, music, intro is similar to opera intro

Unique clips all throughout beginning- sunset and nature clips

"Dawn of Man"

Empty >>Only nature- significance of showing the monkeys first out of anything(evolution of monkey to man)

Monolith- random rectangle clue- w a build in music

Dramatic cut between these really suspenseful clips and the really calm ones (loud music then silence)

Monkey shattering bones- direct result is technology, innovation and imagination

Introduced the bones to other monkeys and used them as clubs to murder intruders on watering hole

Transition from bone to satellite- iconic scene

Clips of all the technological advances

Supposed to represent 2001- 21 years ago

"grip shoes" to keep flight attendant grounded in space

"voiceprint identification" - technology like siri

"picture phone" is equivalent to todays facetime

Weird stuff happening at Clavius (where he is headed now) according to other people staying at hotel

With monkey's there was that separation of groups and we are starting to see that now in future

Space food is boxes with straws compared to the dry freeze space food we have today

No people of color at all

Clavius made a significant discovery and they need a cover story

Was this item put here on clavius on purpose

Monolith where they landed same as the monkeys makes a high pitched noise change occurs when they touch it

HAL 9000>> can reproduces or mimic human brain- foolproof and incapable of error (error will be made), programed to seem as though he has emotions

Hibernation chambers used to reserve resources

Hal>> IBM- international business machines (referencing things done in the past)

The interaction between Hal and the crew is a little bit weird

Something went wrong and he is required to go an fix it (famous scene of his red space suit in white ship) iconic suit

Arm buttons on sleeve - IBM

Eye of hal- red light

Helmet is scanning the ship implying a screen inside of his helmet (the advanced technology)

Hal is blaming human error on the discrepancy between her and the twin 9000

They go into the pod and turn off communication systems so they can discuss hal's integrity

Hal controls the entire ship

Hal attempted to kill Dave's partner off for doubting her and then lied to Dave saying she didn’t know what happened

Computer malfunction- ends the life of other crew members, life functions terminated

First killing machine is Hal

She lets Dave know she knows about his and Fank's plan and strands him

Scene where he is inside brain of Hal is iconic

Hal begging him to not kill her switch

Hal- "Im afraid dave" repetition (something that a robot or AI shouldn’t feel or understand)

"I can feel it " repetition (something that a robot or AI shouldn’t feel or understand)

Jupiter- he has his acid trip and finds himself in a room where he comes face to face with his future self

Love Death + Robots

My favorite animated short from Love, Death and Robots was Pop Squad. Pop Squad was written by Philip Gelatt and directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. This short follows a cop who is in charge of preventing overpopulation and must hunt down children and remove them from society. We start to see the "human toll" that this occupation has on this cop and how it changed him and led to his ultimate character development. I really enjoyed the emotion and power behind the story-line and how it reflected a futuristic society. The population control, flying cars, rich society, and the immortality were all elements creating this very futuristic society throughout the short. The fact that the medical advancements led to immortality which caused this society to have to turn to population control and killing children is definitely something that resonated with me the most. This concept really felt like a twist on technology and technological advancements destroying the human population. I hope that instead of this short foreseeing the future that it is taken almost more as a warning for the future and the dangers of falling into a society in which immortality is the most important thing.

Metropolis Movie Notes

 Division between rich and poor

  •   rich live above ground and poor below ground
  • differences in clothing and actions- workers have dark plain clothing where rich have elaborate Wall Street style clothing, workers/poor head down & rich head held high and proud
  • major themes: rich vs. poor, employee vs. employer
  • workers movement (choreography) similar to that of a machine - this creates a dramatic distinction between poor and wealthy lifestyles
  • stereotype of rich and poor is still present in society today
Futuristic Architecture

  • gigantic cities, sky bridges, planes flying between bridges
  • city controlled by underground machines
  • tall buildings and doorways make people look small and insignificant
  • the futuristic city they were picturing is still the futuristic city we picture today
Maria and Freder

  • Maria is just a commoner yet she glows
  • Maria and Freder both appear in light colored clothing and stand out among everyone else in the workers city
  • Maria gives the workers hope her character reflects the idea of a "saving grace" and "innocence"
  • Freder is mediator- he will save the workers and unite the city (head and hands) because he is the heart
  • Scientist needed to imitate what was good in society (evil camouflage/imitation)(Maria)
Symbolism in the Movie

  • Maria = savior and destroyer, good vs. evil (distinction between movement and makeup), Mary the virgin
  • Freder= heart and savior
  • Hel - one letter off of hell, represents evil, "machine-man", caused mass destruction and violence throughout city, demonic movement (choreography), representing sin
  • Upside down pentagram above Hel
  • Machines controlling man and almost leading to their ultimate downfall
  • Biblical references - God wasn't used as punishment the machines created by man are
  • Technology interferes with humanity
  • Today we fear technology itself whereas in the movie the creator of the technology is what is feared
  • Society is easily influenced in the film which is a big thing in society today. People just want something to believe in
  • technology dehumanizes
